Custodian

SYNOPSIS:


The Custodian must be physically able to perform housekeeping related duties that require repetitive bending, stooping and lifting.  Duties include cleaning and maintaining assigned areas within the Alabama Fire College's facilities and grounds, operating various equipment and using necessary cleaning supplies and materials.  This position is a non-exempt, full-time benefitted position with a salary range of $26,670 - $42,430 annually ($12.82 - $20.40 hourly) based on experience and qualifications.  This job may require an alternate schedule such as evenings and/or weekends as needed in accordance with the operation of the Alabama Fire College.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


  • Clean and maintain assigned areas of the facilities and grounds to include but not limited to:
    • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedures
    • Refill restroom dispensers
    • Clean, dust and wipe furniture
    • Sweep, mop and vacuum floors
    • Replace light bulbs
    • Wash walls and equipment
    • Wash accessible interior and exterior windows
    • Clean blinds
    • Launder cleaning rags, bed linens, towels, dish rags and dust mops
  • Properly dispose of waste, including hazardous material/waste to include but not limited to:
    • Empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers
    • Empty and clean ash trays and cigarette urns
    • Handle recycling materials
  • Operate cleaning equipment such as electric walk-behind floor buffers, wet/dry vacuum, large riding buffing scrubbers and vacuums, carpet cleaners and pressure washers to perform tasks including but not limited to:
    • Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors
    • Vacuum and shampoo carpets
  • Use cleaning supplies and materials as directed - follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies
  • Participate in ensuring the security of the grounds including but not limited to:
    • Lock and unlock assigned buildings
    • Secure building(s) when facilities are not in use, checking for unlocked doors and windows
    • Report any unauthorized occupants
    • Turn off lights
  • Assist in inventory control
  • Safely operate all passenger vehicles and other job related equipment
  • Perform duties in a safe manner
  • Perform duties that require repetitive bending, stooping and lifting
  • Perform duties that require standing or walking for extended periods of time


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Participate actively and creatively in activities of the institution including but not limited to:
    • Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
    • Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an as needed basis
  • Participate in Alabama Fire College professional development training including but not limited to:
    • Attend safety meetings and other related meetings
    • Take classes as required in cleaning methods and techniques, new products, first aid, CPR and working relationships
  • Attend to emergencies when necessary
  • Enforce and support established policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisory personnel


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Experience in performing housekeeping/custodian related duties preferred
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
