Training Specialist - Full Time/Part Time July 2019

SALARY:  $48,013 - $75,971 based on experience, qualifications and whether full time or part time

The Training Specialist is an exempt position required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week (please keep in mind accepting the position for 30-39 hours per week is considered part time).  This position is responsible for delivery of classroom and drill field instruction in assigned courses, maintenance and upkeep of all equipment used in the delivery of course materials, and special duties as assigned.  Must be able to teach using curriculum for fire and emergency services related topics and serve as a Safety Officer.  The Training Specialist must be able to coordinate the delivery of Alabama Fire College programs as assigned and must participate in the currency and development of curriculum to be used in assigned programs of responsibility.  The primary functions of the Training Specialist, requires the individual employed in this position to report to the Alabama Fire College campus on the days they are scheduled to work.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Design assigned courses, deliver and/or coordinate the delivery of instruction in a manner that ensures an effective learning experience
  • Maintain a high level of competence and expertise in the teaching field or subject area assigned
  • Incorporate current teaching techniques, subject area developments, and current technology (if applicable) into the learning experience
  • Periodically provide drill field and classroom instruction in accordance with approved curriculum
  • Inform students concerning course requirements, evaluation procedures attendance requirements, and academic progress
  • Provide for effective evaluation of the learning experience of each student
  • Prepare and grade skills, assignments, projects, and examinations are required
  • Participate in the planning of effective long-range goals for the department
  • Demonstrate effective people skills, communication skills, and work ethic (i.e. preparation and punctuality)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the mission and goals of the Alabama Fire College
  • Provide maintenance and upkeep on equipment used in classes assigned
  • Cleans, services and makes minor repairs to ensure the operational readiness of vehicles, apparatus, hoses and emergency equipment; participates in the cleaning, repair and upkeep of department buildings, grounds and facilities; insures a safe working environment.
  • Participates in drills, demonstrations and courses in firefighting techniques, equipment and apparatus operation, medical aid, heavy rescue, hazardous materials, fire prevention, equipment maintenance and a wide variety of other subjects related to the fire service
  • Liaison effectively with applicable Technical Review Committees
  • Assist in the development and revision of course content

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in division/department meetings, and discussions about curriculum, teaching-learning techniques, teaching materials, and other instructionsl related activities
  • Make written request and prepare purchase orders for equipment and supplies needed
  • Actively participate on division/college committees and task forces
  • Participate creatively in activities of the institution
  • Write articles and provide news briefs and pictures for the newsletter in areas assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Firefighter II Certification required
  • Fire Instructor II Certification required
  • EMT Certification required
  • Associates Degree and 3 years full-time fire service experience or 5 years full-time fire service experience required
  • Prior experience in Fire Service training required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science or Instruction Technology preferred
  • Prior course development experience preferred
  • Three years experience as a licensed paramedic preferred
  • Possession of an Alabama Paramedic license or ability to obtain an Alabama Paramedic license within 30 days of employment preferred
  • Prior teaching experience in an emergency medical services educational program preferred
  • Instructor status in ancillary EMS classes (CRP, ACLS, PALS/PEPP, ITLS) preferred
